NelsonGarden’s Question

Hi Marianne,
My Grandmother and I are big gardeners, and something happened in our yard that she hasn’t seen in over 60 years of living here. Our Cream/White Rhododendron bush is in bloom right now. Its started about 12 days ago, and is flourishing. She does not own a computer let alone understand the Internet. So I told her how I could send you a question online and that you would personally answer it. If you have any insight on this, my grandma and I would greatly appreciate it. We also read your column in the News Tribune everyday and are big fans of yours. Thanks for your time reading this. I don’t have a photo of it right now, but if you would like, I can take one and send it to you.

Marianne's Response

Hi Matt - and thanks for taking the time to help out your Grandmother. I am enchanted by your reblooming rhododendron and have seen this happening every time we are blessed with a moist, warm, autumn season. It means you have a rhodie that is getting a jump start on spring and there is nothing to worry about. My red Bow Bells has bloomed in October several times. There is also a new azaleas on the market called \"Encore\" that flowers in spring and in fall every year. If we do get a hard frost and the blooms freeze don't worry. The rhodie will just go to sleep or slip into dormancy and be fine in the spring. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti P.S. It was my grandparents that introduced me to gardening - what a gift.
