Soil and fertilizer mixture for planting

When planting flowers, do I mix the old cultivated dirt in with the new soil or do I lay new soil over old dirt?

Marianne's Response

I like to mix all the soil together along with the fertilizer in the planting hole. This way the roots don't just stay in the comfort zone but learn to spread out and look for food and water on their own. Loosen the bottom of the planting hole with a shovel just to increase the drainage, add some new soil, then some old soil from hole you just dug then mix, then add more old soil and new soil and mix around the roots. Don't stomp on the soil to firm. Use your hands to press the soil instead. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
