How much to use a sprinkler system

I now live in Enumclaw in “Bar S area” off of 400th and built a house 1 1/2 years ago. New lawn for the front and the back 1/2 acre was hydro seeded last summer. I spent a lot to water and establish the lawns. I had sprinklers put in at the same time. What I would like to know is how often, how frequently and what duration should I set the sprinkler system to water the lawn now that it is established? Also the sprinkler system drips for the trees and in the raised beds – how much.

Most people water way too much if they have a sprinkler system. In Western Washington this leads to fungal and mold problems. Your lawn needs one inch of water a week - set out a tuna can, run the sprinkler and see how long it takes to put one of water in an empty tuna can. It is best if you water just once a week. This will force the roots to go down deep to seek water instead of staying on top. Trees and shrubs once established can survive on even less water. Try watering them only during the dry months of August and September and again just once a week. You may need to dig into the soil and see how far the water has penetrated and make sure when you do water that the soil is dark all the way to the root zone. A mulch on top of the soil will seal in the moisture and keep out weeds so you will use much less water. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
