A new garden needs more water than an established one and most trees and shrubs in Western Washington survive on rainfall alone - if the soil is good. Lawns need one inch of water a week. It is best to water once a week and water slowly and deeply until the water goes down six inches so that the roots ill go deep. Even with a lawn watering every day or every other day is a bad idea - this causes shallow roots, moss, weeds and other issues.
