Marianne's Response

non blooming hydrangea

My hydrangea has lots of leaves and looks great, but no blooms. Can you tell me why? I also have three patches of strawberry plants, no berries.

Marianne's Response

Lack of blooms in hydrangeas is most often from improper pruning or too much shade. Most Hydrangeas flower on two year old wood and bloom best if they are not pruned. Strawberries need sunshine and fertile soil to make flowers and then berries. Did you notice the strawberries flowering this spring? I would make sure they get at least 6 hours of sunshine and feed in spring with a slow release plant food like Osmocote. Make sure the plants do not dry out this summer and you may have a great crop next year - of both hydrangeas and strawberries. Looking forward to a better year is one of the great things about being a gardener. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
