Marianne's Response

Ok to cut back?

Hi Marianne!
After the cold temps and snow in Gig Harbor in January, my grasses and hardy fushias are not happy. Is it ok to cut them back now? Or should I leave the foliage on, as kind of a protection for more cold weather to come? As always, thanks! Cathy

Please wait! February in the Pacific Northwest is not yet spring and a cold spell could damage any new growth you might stimulate by cutting back tender plants like fuchsias now. As for grasses, some do not need cutting back ever as they do not go dormant such as  black mondo grass. The larger ornamental grasses such as Carl Forester grass and miscanthus  grass can be pruned in early spring before the new green growth pops up such as in early March. A good tip is to tie up the clump of tall brown grass with twine or a bungee cord then cut a few inches from the ground and the entire clump can be placed more easily in a wheelbarrow and taken to be composted. Hardy fuchsias should not be pruned until May or when all danger of frost has passed. It does appear that the grass in the photo you sent may be a tender grass type such as a cordyline. It may not return this spring as they are rather tender and often do not survive the winter weather. No worries, a plant did not survive means space in the garden to try something new. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
