You did not mention what the beds are made of but you did say they were not built very well and are not much to look at. For this reason I suggest you tear them out, remove all the weeds, till up the soil and start over. You will struggle with weeds the first year as the soil is filled with weed seeds from the neglect. You may want to study different ways of growing from raised beds.
