Marianne's Response
Old Raised Beds
Just recently purchased a place in the country that has 5 raised beds. The previous owners did not take care of them and they are completely run over with grasses and weeds. What would be my best course of action? The structure wasn’t built very well and isn’t much to look at. I’ve considered tearing it out, tilling it under and starting over, but there are 5 50 sq ft beds. I’m open to suggestions and thank you for your help.

You did not mention what the beds are made of but you did say they were not built very well and are not much to look at. For this reason I suggest you tear them out, remove all the weeds, till up the soil and start over. You will struggle with weeds the first year as the soil is filled with weed seeds from the neglect. You may want to study different ways of growing from raised beds. The classic book on this topic is Mel Bartholomen's book "Square Foot Gardening" with lots of diagrams and photos to help you design your new garden. Welcome to the country. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
