Marianne's Response

Organize Border

I’m cleaning up a border that was started years ago. My daughter recently added the gladiolus so I’d like to keep everything except the grass. From left to right – lilies, gladiolus, loosestrife, gladiolus and grass and lavender. Should I move the second line of gladiolus closer to the first line? Would like to add peonies. Any advice appreciated. Thank you!!

Marianne's Response

What a fun project you have. I don't think you need to move the glads but I do think you need to add peonies or some other plants with a more course or bold texture. There are just a lot of fine  foliage plants in the border and by adding large leaves with a more rounded shape such as Lady's mantle or cranesbill geranium you would have a better composition. Some purple or silver foliage plants such as heuchera or lamb's ear or Senico 'Angel Wing' will introduce contrasting leaf colors. Have fun composing, Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
