I do need some more information before I make a guess on this mystery. Is the palm in a pot? Is it outdoors or an indoor plant? Could you take a photo of the mysterious raised rings? You did the right thing cutting off the dead branch. Sometimes branches die from old age, sometimes too much water or it could have a root problem. Hang in there as help is on the way!
