Marianne's Response

Plant ID

Do you know what plant this is? It has not flowered yet. I must have broadcasted last summer outside in a sunny location. It is definitely frost hardy. I am on the south hill of Puyallup

Marianne's Response

It looks to me like the unusual perennial Cerinthe major or Honeywort.  The waxy blue leaves help it to conserve water as this plant is from the dry areas of the Mediterranean. In your climate it will be a half hardy perennial. It is known for its deep blue blooms in late summer or fall as the weather cools. It does reseed in open fields.  It is poor drainage or wet soil that kills this drought resistant plant so it thrives best on hillsides or rocky soil. I think you will love the unusual blooms. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
