Planting under a tree with exposed roots
Hello, please advise what type of flowering ground cover can be planted under and around this very large tree on front lawn which actually does allow sunlight to penetrate? What would you suggest adding to existing soil, mulch perhaps, to give ground cover something to adhere to? Funds are limited. Anxious for your response! Thanks very much, Debbie Weisbrot

Depending on where you live, I recommend evergreen flowering groundcovers such as ajuga, cranesbill geranium or vinca minor. All three will need you to loosen the soil an inch or so and then add a mulch of fine bark or compost so the new plants have some soil to root into. Keep the new plants moist for a few weeks then water this summer when the soil dries out. By spring you should have a blooming groundcover but still need to handweed for another year until the plants grow so thick that they can block out the weeds. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
