Marianne's Response
Dead Sago Palm
I had a sago palm that was doing beautifully. Then all of a sudden, the fronds turned completely yellow and laid down flat on the ground. I cut the fronds off, but the center of the plant appears to always be wet. I’m wondering if I should just dig it up and discard the plant, and if I can plant something back in the same spot. It was really cold in our area last winter and I originally thought that it had frozen until it started growing again. Stumped?

Marianne's Response
My sympathies, I do not think your palm is going to come back. The center of the plant being wet leads me to believe it has rotted from the center and for this there is no cure. I would dig it up before winter, but do not plant anything in that spot until spring. The winter cold will kill off any pathogens left from the palm tree that died. Perhaps you should consider a new plant that is more cold hardy. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
