Heather can be revitalized with a good crew cut. In the spring after blooming or any time before late summer, use hedge shears to cut back the plants' top growth by several inches. Some plants can even be pruned all the way down to just within a few inches of the ground. How much you can prune them back depends on the variety, the weather and the health of the plants. I would start by taking just a few inches off the top and see how they respond. It may be easiest to do this with a string trimmer if you have a lot of heather plants.
