Marianne's Response

PPobst-question

I bought some bracken fern (pteridium aquilinum) at a garden show, and afterward did the research (late, I know). The books say it’s allelopathic, and will poison its way to dominance of its territory. Is there anything I can plant it near, which will be unaffected by its chemical warfare? How about hostas, vincas, other ferns?

Marianne's Response

Seems to me I have seen salal and sword fern growing near bracken fern and also huckleberry, cedars and vine maples. There looks like a theme here. Plants native to the Pacific Northwest can survive peacefully with the rather unneighborly bracken fern.
