Propagate Sedum Autumn Joy

Can I propagate Sedum Autumn Joy in fall when the plant is blooming via the Chelsea Chop method? When would it be safe to plant in the ground?

The answer depends on where you live. You can easily propagate or take cuttings of Sedums now in early fall but only if you live in an area with mild winters. You need at least four weeks of frost free weather for the sedum to root before a hard frost put the plants into dormancy. The plants do not need the flowers at the end of the stem but you do need to remove the foliage from the bottom third of the cuttings because roots will form at the node where you remove the leaves. Good drainage is key as winter rains can cause the cuttings to rot. You can poke the cut stems into potting soil or into the ground as long as the drainage is good. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
