Marianne's Response
Should I Prune or Stake Birds of Paradise?
I live in Zone 9 (Central Florida) and have white birds of paradise that have grown over 25 feet tall in just 2 years. I fear they will just fall over from their own weight. Any tips on how to safely trim them, and keep them a reasonable height for the future?

Rather than trim them, could you consider training them to stay upright instead? Using tall stakes and stringor large wire hoops you can contain the foliage in a more upright position without cutting it back. When you trim Bird of Paradise foliage you take away the energy the plant needs to produce more flowers. The blooms sound spectacular - I would hate for you to lose them.
