Pruning Sedum
I’ve grown sedum Angelina & Nandina Domestica for the first time this year. I now have lots of runners. When do I prune them back & how far back to the crown?
Thanks

Sedum Angelina as a groundcover can be sheared back to keep it under control any time of year or it can easily be pulled out from the ground and it will reroot in any spot you place it that has well drained soil. As for Nandina domestica that is the Heavenly Bamboo not a true bamboo and it should not have any underground runners - if you see runners and the plant is popping up all over it is not Nandina domestica. If you have the true Nandina domestica and it is getting too large you can cut it back to within one foot of ground level so that new growth will renew a sad or damaged specimen. Just wait until spring to do such severe pruning on any shrub. Pruning stimulates growth and severe fall pruning can cause fresh new growth that will be damaged in severe winter weather. You may find seedlings of Nandina around the mother plant and they can be potted up in the fall or spring and grown on to a larger size or transplanted to a different location. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
