Iris seeds are difficult to start. First soak the seed for 24 hours in warm water. Cover seed with 1/4 fine sand. Sow in Autumn in flats then sink the flat into the ground against a north facing wall. Cover with glass. Seeds must be kept cool but moist and need sun for at least half a day. The seeds can take from one month to 18 months to sprout. They must be carefully protected until the seedlings are two years old and then can be transplanted into the garden. You may want to join the Iris society to learn more about propagation by seed. It is much easier to start new plants by dividing the roots or rhizomes of iris.   Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
