Marianne's Response
Saintg-question
I have had fun w/potted zinnias this summer but some of them have developed terrible looking leaves and it is hard to keep them all removed. I wonder if another feeding of Osmocote is the answer (according to directions, it is too soon)since we have had such a hot summer and have had to water them at least twice a day. Is there a way to tell by looking at the Osmocote in the pot whether or not it is spent?
Thank you,
Betty

Hi Betty, I do not think lack of fertilizer is the reason for the leaf spots. The clue to this spotty mystery is that you have been watering twice a day. I suspect the water droplets on the foliage on a sunny day is causing the leaf spots. Try to water only the soil or use a drip system or water only early in the morning before the hot sun arrives. The Osmocote should last up to six months so I am sure it has not been all used. There is no way to tell by looking if the Osmocote is used up as the spent or empty shells will remain in the soil. The way to tell if the fertilizer is used up is if the -plants stop growing and the foliage turns pale yellow. Keep Growing Marianne Binetti
