Marianne's Response

Saving my fig trees.

I have a brown turkey, a celeste and a black jack fig tree. I planted them on the south side of my house against a wall. They have been there for approximately 5 years. The first year, I overfertilized, I think. The second and third years did pretty well and I was getting a fair amount of figs from all 3 trees. I cut the trees back somewhat on fourth year. In the late fall. Just enough to open the tree up and take down some of the height. Last year a friend “helped” me while I was not home and drastically cut the trees back. In the spring. Basically took a power saw straight across the middle of the trees. I had only a few small figs. Since that time, I haven’t done anything for fear of doing further harm. I am in zone 7b. Munford, TN. I have attached photos. Is there any hope for my trees? I love them and the figs they produce. I really want to give them the best care possible. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated.

Marianne's Response

My first thought is not to worry as figs can handle a severe pruning. But the image you sent has me a bit confused. Is that new growth from the fig trees or are the trees still dormant? My advice is to just wait and do nothing. If there is no growth yet the figs could still be dormant and waiting for warmer weather. If they don't have leaves by July, then my sympathies the cold weather got them. If they do have foliage than a warm summer will do the best job of getting them back to good health. Good luck and Keep Growing, Marianne Binetti
