screening tree ideas

Hello – We are looking for a tree to plant to provide screening/ privacy from the next door deck. We would like a 20 foot maximum tree, so we don’t have a huge pruning situation. We would also like it to fill the space to get that privacy in the summer to provide some screening. We are ok with leaves – and the tree being bare in the fall & winter. WE used to have a privot tree there, but it lasted 30 years and recently died. Our yard is a bit shady, but the area we want to plan does get some sun. Any ideas?
Thank you!

Marianne's Response

I am thinking of lots of options when it comes to compact, small trees (dogwoods, Redbuds, contorted filberts, Japanese maples) but I could be of better help if I knew where you lived and what killed the privet. In the Pacific Northwest where I garden the many types of Japanese Maples do well and come in many sizes and forms. The coral bark Japanese Maple is beautiful even in the winter with coral bark and it can be pruned easily dare it grow too large.   Fall is a good time of year to visit a local nursery and see the colors and sizes of various Japanese maples. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
