Your question does make sense. It is always a challenge to decide the best time to plant grass seed but the good news is that if you plant new seed over an old lawn now, and the weather stays cold for another few weeks your seeds will still sprout once the weather (and thus the soil) warms up. The advantage of seeding early is to get a jump start on the weeds. Broadleaf weeds such as dandelion also like warm weather and will take up the open ground where you want the seeds to go. The other advantage is the more plentiful rain earlier in the early spring. You won't have to work as hard keeping the new seeds moist. Don't despair if you decide to wait until May or even the summer months to seed your lawn. In warm weather the grass seeds will sprout sooner and those bare spots will fill in quickly.
