Marianne's Response

sheriffd’s Question

I have rhubarb that was not picked this spring. It is still thick and healthy. Can it still be picked and used at this time of year? All the garden books say to pick in the spring. Thanks

Marianne's Response

No, I would not harvest rhubarb now for two reason. First it will be bitter and tough and second the plant is sending energy down to the roots to overwinter. The leaves are doing their job so let the plant build up winter reserves. When spring comes you'll have a juicy and tart reward. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
