Sourwood Tree

Is a sourwood tree a good choice for our area?

Yes! The sourwood or Oxydendrum arboreum will do well in the Pacific Northwest even though it is native to the Eastern US. It likes acid, well drained soil and offers four seasons of interest with summer fragrant blooms, vivid fall color on a slow growing tree with great winter structure and rich green leaves in summer.  Great for woodland or patio but do not grow where you need to mow beneath the tree as it prefers a spot where the roots are mulched. Just grow for it with this tree. Marianne Binetti
