Overwintering an Angel Trumpet
My Angel Trumpet was beautiful this summer. It’s 3 1/2 feet tall and planted in the ground. Is it possible to winter it over? If so, what is the best way?

Congratulations on your lovely Angel Trumpet. This tender plant can be overwintered, but the method depends on how cold it gets in your garden. The safest way is to dig the plant before a frost, pot it up and move it indoors into a very bright location or rent space in a heated greenhouse. These plants can grow into tree size if you over winter for several years but the downside is they are not very attractive during the winter dormant season so they make rather ugly house plants. Sometimes the most practical approach is to let your tender plants become compost. In mild winter areas like the Southern US you may be able to save the plant by covering the roots with a thick mulch of wood chips 3 to 4 inches deep. Cut back the stem and place an inverted plastic pot on top to keep the winter rains from rotting the stem. Remove mulch and pot in the spring. Good Luck! Marianne Binetti
