Marianne's Response
Strawberry plants need to be planted at the correct depth in a spot with rich, free draining soil and kept moist as they grow roots. The roots meet up with the leaves at a spot called the crown of the plant. The crown needs to be placed at soil level, not too deep or too high above the soil. If you are planting bare root plants you should make a little hill or hump for the roots to sit on as you spread them out then add soil to the roots until the crown is almost covered. If you buy plants in pots just transplant so that the plants are growing at the same level as they were in the container. Strawberry plants will also send out runners with baby plants and root themselves. You can cut these off and plant them into moist soil again being careful not to bury the crowns under soil or plant them to high as they can dry out. A mulch around the plant will help seal in moisture and keep our weeds. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
