suebee’s Question

Is is too late for us to overseed our lawn? We live in Olympia. When we overseed can we put seed, fertilizer and lime on at the same time? Should we puta layer of soil or mulch or peat over the reseeded area?
Thank you!

How wet is your soil right now? If the turf area is soaked with moisture and squishy when you walk on it, then it is better to wait and not work the area until it dries out a bit. Most soils in your area will be full of rain by now. If your soil is sandy and drains well you can add and spread topsoil now so it can settle over the winter. Raking two to three inches of topsoil over the old lawn is ideal - but expensive. Then in early spring when you see daffodils blooming you can spread the seed on top. Just know that the grass seed may not grow until the weather warms and any topsoil or mulch can be hard to work when wet. It may be better to spread lime and fertilizer now and then add topsoil and overseed in the spring. Whenever you seed you should add a \"Starter\" fertilizer made for newly seeded lawns. If your lawn is very old and bouncy with thatch build up you should thatch it before seeding and always aerate before adding fertilizer and lime if you have a lot of moss. Don't be discouraged, if you do any of these things your lawn will be much happier - and the more you do the healthy it grows. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
