Sungron’s Question
We have a fuschia that has wintered over in the garage for the past couple of years and is big and healthy. The main couple of stalks are about half an inch in diameter. We want to put it in the ground instead of a pot next year, but are unsure whether it will survive the winter outside here in Lacey. Should we try it?

Yes - I say just grow for it. Some fuchsias are hard in Zone 7 or Western Washington and these are the type that grow into shrubs but have smaller blooms that resemble dainty earrings. To increase the odds of survival choose a spot that gets morning sun and is protected from winds. The East side of the house is ideal. The first summer and fall you will need to water to keep the soil moist but once established hardy fuchsias are remarkably drought resistant. Also do not prune these shrubs in the fall or early spring. Wait until you see new growth in May before removing any old wood that did not survive the winter. Good luck and Keep Growing, Marianne Binetti
