Marianne's Response

Sungron’s Question

I need corny guidance. An old Sunset book tells me that corn has specific watering requirements and goes on to explain that it needs thorough watering when the silk appears and some time later. They don’t specify anything else. Are they saying that corn shouldn’t be watered before the silk appears? I don’t want to overwater, but it seems that it would need some water to prevent withering.

Marianne's Response

Corn is often grown in hot dry climates (Oklahoma - where the corn gets as high as an elephant's eye!) but on the West Coast we don't get that much heat so don't worry just water the corn when the top six inches of soil is dry - maybe not at all if it rains - in Western Washington we can often grow corn with no irrigation at all - and it should be knee-high by the 4th of July.
