Mystery squash plant
Do different varieties of squash crossbreed? I planted acorns and butternuts and have a nice crop of both, but there is one that resembles neither. Is it possible that this is a result of cross pollination or did somebody at the nursery just put the wrong seedling in the pot?

Yes, squash plants do cross breed, as do cucumbers. This is why if you allow seedlings to volunteer from a compost pile the squash or cucumbers can be bitter, tasteless, or even poisonous. It is also possible that you have a seed that accidentally was placed into the wrong envelope or a seedling that was mislabeled. Use this mystery squash as decoration, but don't eat it.
