Marianne's Response
Late harvest winter squash
My winter squash are doing great this year, mostly thanks to advice I got from you. Now I have a harvest question. Late in the season there were several female blooms that I hand pollinated and are now small squash. I want to let them grow as long as possible, to grow as big as possible. Can I let them stay on the vine until frost makes the vines die, or will the frost hurt the squash as well as the vines?

Let those young squash stay on the vine as long as possible. You will know it is time to harvest when the foliage turns yellow from the first light frost. That is your cue to gather your garden goodness and store it for the winter. If rain and cold nights cause any brown or rotten spots to form on the squash then harvest immediately before the soft spots spread. Congratulations on helping out the birds and the bees and creating your own paint brush babies. Sometimes it is nice to fool Mother Nature. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
