Spot composting tomato, squash, and cucumber plants

I spot compost with fruit and veggie peels, etc. and wonder whether it makes sense to leave the roots of old tomato, squash, and cucumber plants in the ground at the end of the season. Is there any benefit?

Yes - you can dig the old remains of your veggie plants right into the ground in the fall and they will decompose to add organic matter. The one warning is that disease and insects can overwinter as this form of spot composting does not heat up like composting in a pile. I do this every other year with healthy plants but clean off the beds the other years and compost in a pile. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
