Marianne's Response

Sungron’s Question

This fall and winter I have been burying coffee grounds and fruit and veggie peels in the garden instead of using the compost can. Am I actually improving the soil or doing something useless or counterproductive?

Marianne's Response

Take a bow - you are improving the soil by using a technique called spot composting - just bury organic matter in the ground and it will naturally decay improve the soil. It does take time and the smaller the pieces the sooner they will return to the earth. Give kitchen scraps six months to decay in the soil before planting. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
