Sweet Peas

I live in the greater Seattle area. Could you tell me when is the earliest I could plant sweet peas in my garden?

Marianne's Response

The traditional date for planting peas or sweet peas in your area is after Presidents Day in mid February. The real consideration is how quickly your soil drains and how cold and wet the weather. Pea seeds can rot in cold weather or in soil with poor drainage. You may have better luck waiting until mid March or even as late as early April.  Try pre sprouting your pea seeds before you plant them into the ground by wrapping them in a damp towel for a few days until the seed coat cracks open. The new seedlings will be quick to emerge from the soil and less likely to rot or be eaten by underground pests.  Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
