Marianne's Response

Can I plant rose stems?

I received roses for Mother’s Day. One of the roses is still alive & has sprouted some new leaves. How would I plant the stem?

It is difficult but you can pot up your rose cutting in a mix of half sand and half potting soil, clip of the flower so that the cutting is inserted 4 inches into the soil with six inches out of the soil. Remove any lower leaves that would be under the soil. Now create extra humidity by covering with a plastic bag but vent if more than a few drops of moisture collect inside the plastic tent. Keep soil moist for 6 months and pot in shade. If the cutting roots, good for you, but be warned that it will most likely not survive outdoors as cut roses come from hot house varieties that are only hardy in tropical climates. To preserve your wonderful Mother's Day memories it would be better to dry and press one of the red rose blooms or to dry the rose petals as a keepsake made into potpourri.
