Marianne's Response
Flowerless daffodils
Many of my King Alfred daffodils have healthy green leaves and no flowers. Should I have fertilized them before the green tops faded? I have heard that there is a fly which eats down into the bulb and ruins it.

More likely your bulbs are too crowded. I assume you know that you must allow the foliage to turn yellow and ripen and to not cut back the leaves after the bulbs finish blooming. This summer dig up the bulbs and remove any small bulblets that are clinging to the largest bulbs. This should allow the big Mama bulbs the freedom to bloom and party on. Too much shade and not allowing the bulbs to dry out in the summer (don't water the bulb bed during the summer months) are other reasons why daffodils will refuse to bloom.
