Tomatillo Help

Hi Marianne!

I have an interesting situation with my Tomatillo. Unfortunately, a particularly aggressive slug attack left me with only 1 tomatillo plant. I expected to get no fruit as I have been told they are not self-pollinating. However, I have an abundance of fruit! The only problem is that every fruit is completely seedless. I am completely stumped as to what is going on. I have it planted in full sun next to several tomato plants and a wildflower patch. It gets lots of bee/bumblebee activity. The plant is very healthy and is about 5 feet tall and several feet wide. I would guess that about 90% of the husks bear fruit. All of the fruit is completely seedless. The fruit is a wonderful texture and has a sweet, mild taste. I was helping to harvest some seeds for next year but that doesn’t seem to be possible. I am stumped as to why I’m not getting any seeded fruit.

Thanks!

Laura

Your plants are most likely sterile or seedless because they had no partners to form seeds with. As you know they are not self pollinating so without other plants nearby they could make no seeds. At least they still taste good and you did get a beautiful harvest. Looks like you will need to buy seeds for next year along with some slug bait. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
