Marianne's Response

Tough tomato skins

I have grown tomatoes in pots and have gotten tough skins on them, so this year, I decided to plant in the ground and still have tough skins. I planted two different kinds and both have tough skins. What am I doing wrong?

Three things can cause touch skins on tomatoes. The variety of tomato is one. Roma tomatoes are know for their tough skins and each variety has different skin thickness. Second, lack of enough water and third very hot days.  Keep your tomatoes well watered and shade them if it is really hot and you may be able to avoid this problem in the future.
