Transplanting Butterfly Bush pt . 2
Hi Marianne,
Thank you so much for answering our questions. I really appreciate it.
So here’s another for you.
Earlier this year I asked about transplanting a butterfly bush that was too big for the space. Now that I’m digging it out I find that the root system is way bigger–as in the roots are large around and very long. I have had to cut them to get the plant out.
My question is: Can I leave the rest of the roots in the ground –actually only one long one that is seemingly growing under my barberry bush. I was able to get the other long thick ones out after cutting from the bush. Will it just die off?
I don’t want the bush to grow back again!
Thanks!

I am going to predict that your well rooted butterfly bush will not resprout. This is just based on my own experience of removing this shrub and leaving a few roots behind that never sprouted. Buddleah or butterfly bush spreads most often via seedlings not underground roots. If I am wrong and your butterfly bush sprouts again please let me know so I can correct my advice for future gardeners. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
