transplanting japans maples

I am trying to move several small (3 feet plus tall) japanese Maples into pots tempoaraily (about 18 months) till I can replant them. I did not get as much root material as I want. Should I trim down the foliage? If so how much? They will get plenty of water just trying to save them.

No, I would not trim down the foliage of newly moved Japanese maples as you transplanted young plants and they should be just fine. If some of the tip growth does die back just snip it off once it turns brown. Don't worry about how long your young trees stay in the container. Japanese maples are very adaptive and can be happy in a pot for years. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
