Marianne's Response
watering the lawn
Hello,
Should I be watering my lawn now? I usually just let it go this time of year, but it’s been so hot!
On the other hand I don’t want to waste water.
Thanks.

If you live in the Pacific Northwest, or other regions where lawns go dormant in the summer , then you do have the option of not watering your lawn. The negative is that the lawn will turn "golden" and stop growing. Once the weather cools and rains return again in mid September your lawn will green up again. The positive is you will save money on your water bill. Other options if you are concerned with wasting water are to replace your thirsty turf with more drought resistant groundcovers such as ajuga, sedums and creeping thymes or to build your landscape around hard scaping such as courtyards and patios and trees and shrubs instead of a lawn. Many regions of the country now have turf replacement programs that offer education and sometimes even financial incentives through the local water districts if you replace your thirsty lawn. One more thing to consider is your neighborhood. If your lawn is visible to all the neighbors and is the only home on the block with a dormant summer lawn it may not be the neighborly way to stand out from the rest. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
