Companion planting with spring bulbs means adding perennials and shrubs that will fill out and cover the mess of the mature bulbs. In your partly shaded bed, add hosta and annuals like impatiens and begonias to the front, sword fern and large-leaved hosta to the back or middle of the bed, and summer flowering shrubs such as hydrangea and Rose of Sharon hardy hibiscus to the center or back of the bed.
