Marianne's Response

What plant is this?

This year we suddenly have hundreds, if not thousands of these, in our yard (concentrated to one area, under white pines and a few deciduous trees). They don’t look like seedlings from and of the trees around us. They are about 2 inches tall right now, started out green, but have begun to turn the purplish color on the photos. Any idea what it is and how to get rid of it? We live in Central Connecticut.

Do you have maples in your neighborhood? The seedling image looks like they are young maples and are easy to uproot or smother with a layer of newspaper with mulch on top. Sometimes a wind storm followed by a perfect storm of temperature and rainfall makes for a very successful germination rate of certain seeds. This was a great year for maple seedlings in your garden. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
