When to Plant Fall Sugar Peas

What is the best temperature at which to sow sugar snap peas? I’m in Zone 6, northern Indiana.

Thank you in advance….Susan

In your area, I suggest you plant around the first week of August (so this week!). Be sure to mulch the soil to keep the seeds cool. Peas like cool soil, but will fail to blossom and set pods if the weather is too warm. Different varieties have various maturity dates. In order to calculate the most likely date for success, find the first frost date in your area. Ask someone local to get an accurate guess -- first frost dates may vary across adjacent neighbourhoods due to proximity to water, elevation, and protection from wind. Microclimates are natural! Next, check the "days to maturity" written on the seed package. Count backwards and add a few days to come up with a sensible date to plant a fall crop of peas. One more tip - don't wait to harvest the pods while young, even before they fill out with peas. Frost dates do not always follow past history, and you don't want to miss out on a sweet harvest from an early frost. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
