Protecting bulbs in winter

I just saw the bulb lasagna video. In zone 5 where does the planted pot go for the winter. I tried this once and left the pot outside. The bulbs were mush in spring. Should the planter be in a garage or watered?
Thanks,
Kim

Marianne's Response

Thanks for watching the video, Kim. The pot sits outside all winter so the bulbs can chill, but like all container gardens it does need good drainage so the bulb won't rot. In a rainy climate, you can protect the pot from too much rain by setting it under the eaves of a roof or evergreen. Just keep it away from gutters that overflow and remember if the pot is raised a bit from the ground, it will drain better. I slip plastic water bottle caps under the pot so that the drainage hole will not be blocked by the weight of the container. My other tip is to use professional potting soil that contains perlite to keep it light. Too much compost in potting soil will hold too much moisture. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
