Marianne's Response

Wisteria’s Question

Hi, Marianne. We will be leaving for New Hempstead, New York on the 20th of April. Our daughter and husband just bought a 1920 home and as you can see from the attached picture the landscape needs a lot of help. We intend to help them re-landscape but I need some expert advise. Their house faces East. She prefers low maintenance, some color and some greens year round. Can you please advise? I appreciate it a lot. She is not attached to any of the plants in that picture, so if you say they all must go, then we can do that. Thank you very much, Marianne.

Marianne's Response

What a great looking house - it deserves some great looking plants. An eastern exposure is perfect for rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias. I suggest some Ilex 'Sky Pencil\" for tall and narrow forms near the front door, the Hino crimson azalea for a low blooming hedge. These evergreens will stand out against the light colored house but add more color than the heavy evergreens there now. No need to remove the current shrubs if they like what is already there. Just add color in pots in front of the evergreens. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
