Beautiful plants for east facing walls
First want to say how much I love your column and as a transplanted PNW resident, value all the information gleaned from each weekâs installment. As with many Sound residents, we have east facing walls on our property comprised of landscape blocks. I have never seen an article addressing how to beautify this lot feature with native plants that would thrive and enhance our walls, growing prettier each year. Thanks for all you do to make our lives easier and our yards and gardens so magical.

Thank you! I appreciate everyone that reads my weekly column in The Tacoma News Tribune, Daily Olympian and other newspapers in Washington State. An east facing wall gets morning sun and is perfect for rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and many conifers. To really make the wall look good fast I suggest you plant clematis at the top and let the blooms trail down over the wall. Chose clematis with different bloom times such as the evergreen armandi clematis for spring white flowers, Jackamani or Nelly Moser (or both) for summer blooms and the Sweet Autumn Clematis for fragrant blossoms in September through October. Bleeding hearts, hosta, saxifrage, brunnera and lamiums are perennial plants that will thirve in this location as well. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
