Marianne's Response

woltzen’s Question

Hi, I have had a burning bush (euonymus alatus) plant for 3 years and it never turns color. It stays green and then the leaves fall off in the Fall. It gets sun, I fertilize it with a fertilizer for acid loving plants once in the Spring, and I don’t give it much water. Do I have a dud? I live on the South Hill of Puyallup. Thanks

I bet you spoil your loved ones. I suspect your burning bush is getting too much fertilizer and water. You get better fall color when these shrubs are slightly stressed and they thrive in poor, rocky soil. Compost and rich soil is known to squelch the fire of a burning bush - I learned this the hard way. I even killed mine years ago by watering it too much. Just be sure it gets full sun but no fertilizer or extra water. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
