Marianne's Response

woltzen’s Question

I have a Contorted Filbert (Corylus) in a pot.It is not real big but has been in the pot for at least 3 years. It is very cute. I want to put it into a different pot that may be a little bigger. The reason I want to repot it is because I don’t like the pot it’s in right now. When can I do this? I am on the South Hill of Puyallup, Wa. Thanks

I love my contorted filbert but it outgrew the pot it was in about 20 years ago and is now 25 feet tall - so expect lots of twisted growth. You can transplant your filbert in early spring when the weather is not freezing - March would be a good month. Don't be afraid to cut back some of the longest roots if you want your plant to stay small. This plant is not a heavy feeder but does need good drainage. One dose of slow release Osmocote plant food each spring is all it should require. Be sure to use potting soil that drains quickly and make sure the pot you use has quick drainage from the bottom.
