Marianne's Response
When do I prune salvia?
I have a hot lips salvia in a pot on my deck. I did nothing with it last fall or this winter. It looks dead. Do I prune it, cut it back, or just leave it? It was beautiful all last summer. Thanks

So glad you asked! Do NOT prune back your salvia now as getting snippy this early in the season will wake up the plant and then it will die when the next cold night hits. Better to let sleeping salvias lie even though they look unsightly. In late April or May when you see sprouts of new growth from the base of the salvia that is when you can cut back the dead top growth and stimulate this marginally hardy plant to restart for a second summer. Other tender plants like fuchsias, hebes, and lavenders should also not be pruned until you see signs of new growth late in the spring.
Keep growing,
